A Festival of Choices
Styrmir GudmundssonMaster of Fine Arts Graduation 2012, Sandberg Instituut
‘A Festival of Choices’ emphasizes upon the relationships and choices made between the graduating student of Sandberg Institute and the diverse range of institutions and organizations offered within the cultural landscape of Amsterdam. From Wednesday 11 july through Sunday 15 July 2012.
At W139 we present Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson with THE DEATH SHOW
Throughout the period of Festival of Choices Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson will give multiple launches of his new book The End is Near: Reflections on Death at W139, Warmoesstraat 139, Amsterdam.
The book includes several reflections on death, all of which take on different characters of writing. As each reflection reacts on the prior one, a method is generated. This method serves as a tool to grow from simple-minded observations toward a multi-faceted outlook on the subject.
At each show he will lead a tour through the pages of the book and demonstrate how it wasn’t until a near-death-experience through an object that he realized that the end is near.

Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson
Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson (b. 1984 in Reykjavik) is a conjurer of fantastic scenes. Working mostly with the medium of drawing, performance and the written language he typically starts with a broad subject and narrows it down towards a specific route. But the way it narrows itself down and what kind of result is gained is determined on the process. Sometimes the work progresses by a long meditative procedure - other times it shifts shape and character by the motivation of an object or a person - fiction or autobiography.
Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson studied at the Rietveld Academy from 2005-2009.
He extended his studies at the Sandberg Institue from 2010-2012.
