Midnight Walkers & City Sleepers

The project consists of two parts; an international exhibition (April 17 - May 2) at various historical and topical locations in the Red Light District and a series of workshops (April 17 - April 19) where topics concerning the changing conditions of the contemporary art scene are discussed are discussed with artists and specialists.

The complex social density of the Red Light District in Amsterdam corresponds, in many respects, with contemporary artistic strategies. International artsists, as well as art theorists, thinkers and other professionals from various fields have been invited to fuse in the area. They will respond or contribute to its fascinating diversity of lifestyles, to the mixture of mundane and exceptional and the combination of banal with the excitement of 'adult industry': drugs and prostitution.

Midnigt Walkers & City Sleepers is not a traditional art route but aspires to be a laboratory in which artists play an inetrmediary role. Within the social and aesthetic 'contract' of now, one of the possibilities of interpreting the Red Light District's complexity is to consider it as a 'pars-pro-toto' for the universal context we share.

For the exhibition 18 international artists have been invited to visit and become familiar with the area. In collaboration with the curators, the artists have submitted a proposal for their intended work. Consequently, each work will be site-specific and expected to relate directly to the location's pecularity. As a kind of microcosm for the problems of today's world, we expect the Red Light District to create a challenging platform for contemporary art.

De Geuzen

By way of a graphic medium, artist group De Geuzen will spread relevant information in and about the area. In cooperation with Stichting de Rode Draad. De kunstenaarsgoep De Geuzen gebruikt een grafisch medium om relevante informatie te verspreiden in en over de buurt. I.s.m. onder andere met Stichting de Rode Draad.

Weekend Art

Tomislav Gotovac, Aleksandar Ilic, Ivana Keser, ‘Hallelujah The Hill’, permanent slide projection of over 700 slides taken over the last four years. Permanente diaprojectie van meer dan 700 dia’s, gemaakt over de laatste vier jaar.

W139

W139 presents their ‘acquisition module’. A showcase of the motives fuelling the acquisition of the W139 builing. The presentation includes the cd-rom of the W139’archive. The module serves to illustrate and explain the necessity of the acquisition to a broader public (artists, foundations, the municipal authorities, public opinion) The 'acquisition module' recruits, cheers and twinkles; ‘W139 buys the future, spread the word’. Stichting W139 zelf presenteert ‘De aankoopmodule’. Een showcase waarin de motieven van het streven naar de aankoop van het W139-pand duidelijk worden gemaakt. Het geheel behelst o.a. een cd-rom met het W139-archief. De module dient ertoe de noodzaak van aan koop voor een zo breed mogelijk publiek (kunstenaars, fondsen, gemeente, publieke opinie) uit te leggen. De aankoopmodule werft, roept en flikkert; ‘W139 koopt de toekomst, zegt het voort’.

16:00 Panel discussion/debate ‘Art in play with another’/‘Kunst op vreemd gebied’ with/ met Superflex, Thomas Hirschhorn, De Geuzen. Maria Hlavajova as/als moderator. Invited are artists and artistic groups who deliberately position themselves outside the (what we commonly speak as of) artistic domain. Interested in entering territories of ‘social’ rather then of ‘aesthetic’, the participants will touch upon the issues bound to their understanding of the notion of art in the late 1990s. Uitgenodigd zijn kunstenaars en kunstenaarsgroepen die zichzelf met opzet buiten de betreden paden van een traditionele kunstcontext positioneren. Zij zijn eerder geïnteresseerd in het sociale dan in het esthetische domein. De deelnemers spreken over hun idee van eigentijdse kunst.

19:00 Inside/Binnen: Bar Slecht 20:00 Lecture-performance/Performance-lezing Boris Ondreicka "doomstyx 2.99" In his lecture-performance Ondreicka discusses, through both visual and verbal mediums, the subject of inhabiting the physical space, the issues of living together with another person and house keeping within their social and psychological context. In zijn lezing-performance bediscussieert Ondreicka, aan de hand van zowel visuele als verbale media, over de fysieke aanwezigheid in de ruimte; het samenwonen en het huishouden delen met een ander, gezien in een psychologische en sociale context.

20:00 Thorvaldur Thorsteinsson, Minna Heikinaho, Tariq Alvi talk about their experiences in the Red Light District/Over hun ervaringen in de rosse buurt These three artists will discuss their personal experiences of the Red Light District. All three spent considerable time in the area in order to create their work for the exhibit. People from the area are invited to exchange ideas with them. Deze drie kunstenaars wisselen hun ervaringen over hun werkperiode in de rosse buurt uit met het publiek, waaronder betrokkenen uit de buurt. Alle drie zijn gedurende geruime tijd op de Amsterdamse Wallen verbleven om in dialoog met de buurt hun werk te ontwikkelen
