The Contented Heart
Morgan Betz, Lutz Driessen, Simon Hemmer, Nie Pastille, Derk Thijs, Phoebe Unwin, Sarah Verbeeken Willem WeismannW139 presents an exhibition of paintings and drawings selected by Sarah Verbeek. The painters she has chosen seem to have an uncomplicated relationship with their medium. They love painting, and painting is what they do.
These are not ‘painting animals’ that need to be in a state of intoxication before they can work. Nor are they slowness fetishists. They feel no compunction to refer to photography. Their work offers neither commentary nor renders account. It is not constrained or formless. Human beings, trees, triangles and splotches abound. The paint is sparing, the gesture placid. Looking closely at these paintings you can see that art is a natural human need, which seems to be lost sight of once in a while.
