Join Kitchen139

In collaboration with Casco in Utrecht, W139 presents Kitchen139, a collective Kitchen project that was perceived in conjunction with the current project exhibition The Grand Domestic Revolution – User’s Manual (GDR) at Casco.

In December 2011, W139 transformed into an open kitchen with a ten-day public program that gave space to a variety of social and cultural initiatives to cook for each other and the audience. Kitchen 139 is curated and moderated by Tim Voss (W139), Binna Choi and Katayoun Arian (Casco).

As the new year begins, we would like to celebrate collective effort and collaboration. In January 2012 the setting of the Kitchen139 remains with a fully equipped kitchen, couches, tables and even beamers to film the cooking. The space is open for use and you are most welcome to use our kitchen and space for workshops, work meetings or simply for a good cooking. Kitchen139 is free for use until 22 January 2012.

If you want to pass by with a group - just let us know by sending an email to kitchen@w139.nl.

As the space is open for all public, you can also come by between 12-18h00 to hang out, use our free wifi, listen to the radio shows of Kitchen139, drink a free coffee or tea or count the fishes in the acquarium...

Kitchen139 - Ten-day Communal Kitchen Experiment

Kitchen139 is conceived out of an observation of what one may call a resurgence of interest in domesticity and social change embodied by movements such as Occupy Amsterdam, who made common domestic matters public on the Beursplein.

Only 200 metres away, Kitchen139 could be considered as a differentiated, extended tent of Occupy Amsterdam and a voice in the continuous call for a grand domestic revolution today.

Kitchen139 has been co-developed by W139 and Casco in the context of the current project exhibition The Grand Domestic Revolution – User’s Manual (GDR). In GDR, exhibition on view through 26 February 2012 at Casco in Utrecht, the private status of domestic space is questioned and new forms of life in common are searched for.

As part of Kitchen139, W139 and Casco organised a ten-day communal kitchen experiment from 6-17 December 2011. W139 and Casco invited all for those occupied with multiple deadlines and appointments towards the end of year, to join a collective house management where cooking, eating, talking, thinking, cleaning came together. Each evening meal was prepared by a diversity of social and cultural initiatives.
