Esther de Graaf (1984) graduated in 2007 from the Minerva Academy of Art in Groningen. Esther de Graaf builds as much form using as little material as possible. Efficient frameworks that, almost weightlessly, remain in place. All of which is visible yet strives to be transparent. It is clear that it has been made, and the way it was done. How it was constructed and what materials were used. Effortlessly minimised, reduced to the essential. Leaving viewers to work out whether what they see is necessary enough to be visible. The very familiarity of the material – wood, cardboard, steel, plastic in its commonest forms, slats, boxes, foil, tape – disappears into its own ordinariness. A construction built of familiar things. Not to alienate these things from us, but to use their everydayness to enhance transparency. From that which is known, in search of something new. The series, entitled 'SCOPE', can be seen from the 14th of December. '
